Addiewell folk in days gone by

By Thomas Fairley

A good number of Addiewell folks have made good on a national stage.  Others made a name for themselves in the local area, whether for their achievements, their exploits - or just as characters and worthies!

In an article in the Midlothian Advertiser of 1949, Thomas Fairley wrote of some of these folk.  His memories also touch on the pugs at the oil works and some of the pug drivers;  and the very earliest days of the village when houses were so much in demand that they were occupied before the windows were put in!

Here, too, are anecdotes of the Irish navvies who built the works, some of whom then settled in the village; and mention of the famous candles made in Addiewell, that were the 'light of the world'.

The lady in the picture is Sarah Thomson, not Thomas. She was my great aunt.
