In 1885, Addiewell had only one school, the non-denominational Public School.
The minister of West Calder noted that the school had 6 teachers and 2 pupil teachers:
Pupils on the roll: 427. Average attendance during the school year : 310. Percentage of passes: 98.4. Government grant: £290 14s 0d.
The usual elementary branches are taught in all these schools at the following fees per month, viz., infants of 1st standard, 10d; 2nd standard, 1s; 3rd standard, 1s 2d; 4th standard, 1s 4d; 5th and 6th standards, 1s 6d. Children of school age in the parish, 1,744, of whom only 3 resort to Edinburgh schools....
