My Grandad Tommy Woods

First World War

By Tommy Woods

Here is a photo of my grandad Tommy Woods, which was taken in a German prisoner of war camp during the First World War in 1917. He was captured at the Somme and this is a postcard which the Germans supplied for him to send home to the family.

On the reverse of the postcard is his address and his army number and regiment.

The photograph of him on a bike was taken at Breich in 1920 after he returned from the war. The little girl is my aunty Sadie.

What an interesting story.  I didn't know that some POWs were photographed for notification to relatives.  The photo of him with his daughter is lovely.  It's good to remember those who served in and survived the First World War,  not just those who died.
