This article was taken from the Midlothian Advertiser of 11th August 1933, and comprises memories of a very elderly West Calder man, William Brash.

His memories include seeing David Livingstone and "Paraffin" Young on their way to lay the foundation stone at Addiewell Oil Works. This took place in the early 1860s, a monumental occasion in the history of Addiewell.
