Addiewell folk and soldiers, First World War

Unusual photo from the Great War

Photo: Illustrative image for the 'Addiewell folk and soldiers, First World War' page

This is a very interesting and unusual photograph, which Mrs Mary Wilson kindly allowed us to copy.

It shows a group of Addiewell people and soldiers standing beside the parish church. What is particularly interesting is that the soldiers are wearing hospital uniform.  Bangour Village Hospital became a huge war hospital from 1915, and soldiers were also cared for in an auxiliary hospital in Polkemmet House at Whitburn.

This photograph probably shows a party of wounded and recovering soldiers from Bangour or Polkemmet hospital being entertained by a group of Addiewell residents.
